Seasonal variation in water quality, plankton diversity and microbial load of tropical freshwater lakes in Nigeria

چکیده

Seasonal changes significantly affect tropical ecosystems; hence, verification of how these water quality is important for waterbodies that serve as and food sources, particular such are often associated with shifts in plankton diversity microbial loads. This study assessed the seasonal quality, load four lakes serving sources drinking water. Temperature, hardness phosphate concentration were elevated dry season, pH, biochemical oxygen demand, transparency, turbidity, total dissolved solids, conductivity, alkalinity nitrate concentrations wet season. A phytoplankton analysis revealed Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta Dinophyta most common, families Desmidiaceae, Microcystaceae Euglenaceae (phylum Euglenophyta) displaying dominance. For zooplankton, Rotifera was Branchionidae dominating both seasons. In Cyanophyta, Bacillariophyta dominated, Aphanizomenonaceae diverse families. Disease-causing pathogens, Ascaridae, Trichuridae Ancylostomatidae Nematoda), detected during periods high rainfall. The waters season had higher loads than ranging from 1.50 to 233.50 CFU g−1 (p < 0.05). demonstrates variations risk users underlies importance regular assessment particularly given threat elated climate change.

Microbial Quality and Phylogenetic Diversity of Fresh Rainwater and Tropical Freshwater Reservoir

The impact of rainwater on the microbial quality of a tropical freshwater reservoir through atmospheric wet deposition of microorganisms was studied for the first time. Reservoir water samples were collected at four different sampling points and rainwater samples were collected in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir sites for a period of four months (January to April, 2012) during the North...

Microbial reduction and oxidation of mercury in freshwater lakes.

The evasion of elemental mercury represents a significant pathway for reducing the level of this potentially toxic material in aquatic ecosystems. The evasion rate is controlled by the concentration of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) across the air-water interface, water, and air temperature as well as wind speed. Here we investigate the role of microbial mercury oxidation and reduction in regu...

Seasonal Variation in Abundance and Diversity of Bacterial Methanotrophs in Five Temperate Lakes

Lakes are significant sources of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. Within these systems, methanotrophs consume CH4 and act as a potential biofilter mitigating the emission of this potent greenhouse gas. However, it is still not well understood how spatial and temporal variation in environmental parameters influence the abundance, diversity, and community structure of methanotrophs in lakes. To a...
